Echo Tech Art- From what I understood of this piece The artist took pictures of everday life like landscapes and animals. She then turned some of the pictures into a kaleidoscope effect. I found the kaleidoscopes very interesting thought if there was an underlying meaning I’m not sure what it was. If I had to make a guess maybe it was just a paradox on how some people see things in life with a distorted view.

Divorce Photo’s- This was probably my favorite piece at the exhibit. There were 4 collumns and rows of lcd screens. The top 3 rows displayed different pictures of different people getting divorces. The bottom row of screens displayed information about the couples and their reasons for getting a divorce. The irony I got from this is that these couples were splitting up and the pictures were displayed on split screens.

Fail Point- this piece was saterical in nature. It looked as though it was people poking fun at the horrible internet and t.v. connections that are offered to people up north.

Twerp- This piece really got me laughing. It poked fun at the site “twitter” and the idea of how absurd it would be if we said out loud what we tweeted.

Augmented Reality

The use of augmented reality kind of scares me. I like the idea of being able to point myp hone at things and having it tell me what they are and such. The idea of wearing contacts that constantly streamed information to me seems like a little too much I could also see augmented reality getting old really fast.

The decline of the Hollywood Studio System

I found this reading quite interesting. I had no idea that this had even happened. I think it was for the best though if I’m grasping it correctly. From what I retained from the reading they were trying to make it so everyone who was involved in the movie industry got paid and not just the hot shot movie executives.

Sony to offer video on blu ray-internet and then dvd

This was an interesting read. I did not know that we were headed towards an television run on the internet. I think this is an interesting tactic for sony to try I’m curious to know how it turned out. I also think that it would be a great idea for Sony to allow some of it’s movies to be purchased straight from the playstation. I think they would benefit from that greatly.

The Price of Free

Im going to start off by saying I had no idea a blu-ray player could do all that. I’m probably going to get one soon. This story raised an interesting thought. With everyone spending more time watching their shows on the internet the idea of paying for t.v. does seem a little ridiculous. I myself have gotten by just fine at college without cable in my room up until I got my recent roommate. Before the t.v. in my room I would always just watch what I wanted to online when it was convenient for me. I would hope that my change to viewing t.v. online will not result in more reality shows and police dramas as predicted in this reading.

Payday for Virtual Goods

The idea of anyone paying for something that is not real blows my mind. I knew things like this existed but I did not know it did in games on social networking sites. I could maybe understand a serious gamer paying for spell or item upgrades but I do not understand casual Americans, who are playing these games just to pass some time, spending money for virtual items. In my opinion it seems like a waste of our money. The economy isn’t great right now and I wonder if this would be a way to help that a bit but at the same time it seems highly unlikely to me that the purchasing of virtual items ever gets much more popular than what was reported in this article.

Envying the Multitasker

This reading was definatley very interesting. I find myself multi-tasking quite a bit but I never thought of it as a bad thing. I was surprised to know that it was thought of as that way. I’m interested to know the differences of how I multi-task and maybe how my mother does.

Swiss Sues Google Street View

I was surprised to find that anyone had an issue with google maps needing to take pictures for their street view. I mean essentially anyone could walk around and take pictures on the street whenever they wanted and noone would say anything for the most part. I feel like people are just taking advantage of the fact that google is a major company and are probably trying to squeeze some cash out of them.

Open Source Bus Model

I think we can all appreciate things that are free to use. I think its cool that people developing software’s will put what they have already created out there for other people to try and advance. I can appreciate what some of these companies are trying to do. Nothing annoys me more than major companies ruining the economy for smaller businesses. These giant companies that are trying to be the best at everything are ruining the possibility for newer smaller companies to start up.

The Fall and Rise of Media

This article was very interesting for me to read as a student right now. Hearing things about how certain technologies are becoming obosolete at times worries me that I’m going to have a hard time getting a job yet at the same time it drives me to be able to master new technologies quickly. It also makes me force myself to try and think ingeniously. This article for me really stressed the importance of having fresh new ideas to bring to the table when I’m finally out the door with my degree and in the real world. The closing statement really inspired me. I hope that to the people who may want to hire me that I am one of the youth that see’s the field of media as constantly growing as technology does and not becoming obsolete because of it.

Google Chrome Browser

The idea of cloud computing intrigues me. It definitely seems like a good idea but I’m probably going to want to see all its pro’s and con’s before I make a judgment call on it. I would like to see some more companies doing well instead of Microsoft sucking up all the profits. In my opinion windows isn’t even a user friendly operating system. It is much easier for me to get things done on my Macintosh than I ever was able to on my pc. I might download and try out google chrome the web browser to see if I might be a fan of google chrome the operating system.

Free Speech and the Internet

This article raises an important issue. The internet as it stands is kind of anything goes environment of information and media but does it need restraints? I feel like our freedom of speech should definitely carry over to the internet. People have the right to say what they think and feel. This may seem a bit off topic, but, if you killed somebody I think you should be aware that people are going to talk about it. Yeah they served there time in prison and what not but that should not stop people from being able to post things about it. We all think before we act about what people are going to think about us. I’m aware of what I look like when I leave the house in the morning and most of us try to watch what we say in front of certain people. We do this because we are trying to represent ourselves a certain way. If these people being released from prison didn’t want to be talked about they shouldn’t have killed anyone in the first place. That is my stance on that. Aside from that tangent, I think that there are definitely some restrictions that should be put on the internet. For example even though its illegal, I’m sure there are still websites and blogs with child pornography on them. This would be something you would want to crack down on. Not what riff raff people are typing up in their blogs or online encyclopedias.

Online Wiki Mapping

This is so cool! I think its totally awesome that people are doing this. What was said in this article is so true. It seems much more efficient to me to have maps that are constantly being updated so you always know what to expect. I bet there are some more professional maps that have not been updated in years and I assume it would take so much time for them to update them. Using these outdated maps you probably run into travel issues a lot more than you would if you were using one of these online maps. I am all for this online amateur mapping. I think it’s great!

Week 14 evolution and technology article?

I find all information about evolution to be fascinating. Even though this was just things that could be predicted it still greatly interested me. The idea that people would be able to select what sperm and what egg would make their child was really eerie. I found it creepy that they predicted a world of smarter more attractive humans. The idea of being able to travel at light speed through a computer and be downloaded into robots to walk the earth was extremely terrifying to me. I don’t think I would be ready for that kind of technology. This article was very interesting but I personally don’t think we will see this happening in our lifetime.

New Media Photography

We went over pictures that tell a story

In dU baui they are creating amazing buildings which are shown to us through photographs but there is another picture showing a huge line of sewage trucks taking the sewage out because the sewer systems can’t support the city.

We watched a video that a photojournalism student did it was a narrative story of a puppeteer and he made a good statement. He said being around creative people is really great because it feeds you and your own creativity.

It is great to see the way people use new media in applied ways as well as just abstract art pieces. The pictures in du baui to show the irony in the fact that they have these beutiful buidlings and structures and yet lack and adequate sewer system for their community was great. The narrative example that was shown was also a very effective piece. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Guest speaker owen smith

Students were talking about googling themselves and seeing if they come up on the internet

Owen would google himself and there were a bunch of different Owen Smiths

He made a website made up of a bunch of Owen Smiths he had found.

He raises the question how do we negotiate who we are in the online world.

He had a project where he took a bunch of other “owen smiths” and had there pages link to him and other owen smiths.

Owen Smith is affiliated with artists who make untraditional art such as film and the web. ( traditional art being painting, drawing, ect.)

Owen’s Dad was an industrial designer. He grew up on the westcoast in seattle. He moved away from more large scale objects and more temporary pieces . He had a piece he showed us of metal rods weaving through a landscape. It was a way of adding an element to the landscape that got you to pay attention to movement and space. Similar to sculpture but without the large objects. He was pushing and playing with the idea of work and art. He made a piece built out of natural materials he called “ house mark” it was an 8 foot stack or rocks in a house shape he built while he was working for a man clearing out a field in France. He states there are a lot of people who say art is not work. So he wanted to make this piece to show that art can be hard work.

“What makes something an artwork. Things that are designated as artworks art artworks. “- Owen Smith.

He took a map through a dart at it and went to that place on the map and picked things up from an area and sealed them in a tin can which let him designated what was the art.

He had an art piece that was an image grabbed off of the tv during the 911 attacks. Its point was to show the repetition of how it was being shown on a bunch of channels taking the focus of off the tragedy of the loss of life.

He had a picture called saint and sinner where he took 2 people the “saint and the “sinner” and took a picture princess dianna and tawny harting and pixilated them to the point where you can’t actually tell them who they are. He makes the point that the image is not a given just like calling someone a saint or sinner isn’t a given and is more of a perspective or point of view.

I always enjoy when Owen comes to talk to us. He showed us a lot of his own art work. He also encouraged us to push the boundaries on what people consider art. I especillay liked his piece that was the rockwall. It showed that manual labor can be considered art and kid of through the art being for lazy folks stereotype out the door.

Jefferson Goolsby came to talk to us.

He encourages to take place in the digital art minor that will be taking place in the spring. He lived in Japan for a bit. He informs us that we will most likely have a wonder on our path and taking sometime to find out where you are headed. He mentions the fact that we have multiple interests and to try not to get locked down in one career to much. He played in a band in japan called the occupation it was as he put it a “ post punk” band. The exchange rate in Japan made it so that if you made 4k in japan and brought it back to the u.s. you had 8k.

“ Flexibility is a thing that will help you adapt” – Jefferson Goolsby.

He suggests we not get tied down to one place and to explore the world and try working in different countries. He said he traveled for a year sometime after college. Many different parts of the world and it only cost him 10,000 dollars. He showed us a music video he made as something he did for a graduate piece. Then he showed us an experiment he did where he and his friend smashed a car. He placed cameras in side the car with extendable arms so when the car was smashed with a hammer the cameras would rock. He took the video from the car and the 4 different cameras were projected on different walls and sound would be emitted in the room when footage of the car being smashed was played. They later added the car itself to the gallery but blocked you from being able to see the interior of the car so the only way you could experience that was through the projections. He talked a bit about collaboration. Don’t get weighed down with collaborators who are going to hold you back. He showed us a performance him and his wife did. He made an animation that went with her cello/violin performance.

Jeff Goolsby related t.v. to cigarettes or something else that’s addictive.

He thinks the passive consumption of t.v. is bad for people and he states that he gave it up. He informs us that he is “ not a big internet guy” so most of his work is installations. He showed us some of his projects he did with isidora which is apparently a program like max msp that is easier to use.

He encourages us not to take our 20’s to seriously and to take it as more of an experiment. Don’t be afraid to change your path to much. Don’t worry about changing jobs as long as your doing something you love. Try to be creative in your approach to what you want to do.

I was really happy to have Jeff come talk to us. He is a really inspiring person. All of the artworks he showed us were amazing. It was nice to have somone encourage us to take our time in our late teens and 20′s to explore things and learn about who we are and what we are interested in. He seems like a nice guy I’ll probably end up taking one of his classes in my college career.

We talked about how when we are out of college everyone isn’t going to be focusing on New Media and we have to apply what we learn to different contexts for example the concern for our ecological future

We talked about the movie we watched in lab called “ Man With a Movie Camera” The scenes where there are 2 things going on at the same time was done very complex in the editing part of the movie. This was done before computers so it was really intense how they had to edit 2 different roles of film , think about how they act with each other and then print them on top of each other.

The question of what is new media continues to arise. Someone made a point of the tree art piece in the exhibit that was here on campus and how it used all recycled green materials to make the tree. The question was posed as to how that is new media. Someone suggested new media is anything we want it to be. I disagree. I think that new media is all new technologies that are advancing the way we live work and play on the planet.

This class lecture we had an open discussion. We mostly talked about the complexity of the editing of the “movie man with a movie camera”. That we watched in lab. It was very advanced editing for its time. I always love when we discuss what new media is in class because everyone has their own opinion on it.

Going over shooting movies.

Interviews with the actors and the directors

“ Keeping track emotionally with the characters is key for me” – (______)

Michel Kahn editor for Schindler’s List

Spielberg says he loves long talking scenes because you can edit it to go anyway you want. It can be very leisurely and introspective or the drama can get funny.

Sound and Image can manipulate audiences as shown through American war propaganda videos like “ Why we fight: Prelude to War”

Theme of the film is “ great lets go to war and die” said by the director of starship troopers.

Michael Kahn “ editing is manipulation , you are trying to get the audience to respond a certain way whether it’s a sigh or a fright or whatever”

There were unwritten rules with editing and you had to show a person going from one place to another through a door and so on. “Breathless” was breaking all the rules like how long to hold a shot or when your able to cut scenes.

Bonnie and Clyde (violent film with interesting shots”

Paved the way for films like easy rider.

“Bodyheat” trying to have a sexy movie. The 70’s was this big sex liberation and such. They believed that the less they showed the more erotic there sex scenes were.

Fragmenting time and space was becoming more effective

George Lucas – “ All art is technology, that is the nature of it”

Editors used to be just another hired person but finally editing has received the attention it deserves and is given credit for collaboration on films.

This lecture we went over the way movies are shot. Back in the old days movies were all shot the same way with the same angles. It wasn’t until later years that people started to experiment with different angles. It used to be in movies if somone was going to get out of the car to go into a house you would see just that. You would see the car door open somone walk out and up to the door. Then they would open the door and walk in. Then you would see them walking in the door shot from inside the house. In todays world we don’t need that much information to know that this person got from here to here. We also learned about how things can be shot to be sexual or agressive and violent without having to show the actual sex or agression act. We as people are imaginative and sometimes in movies it is more effective for somethings to be left to the imagination.

A) Where the Cinema began

I) When t first came out it was believed that film had no future

II) Porter was the first to cut film and mix them together

1) Second film was called “the great train robbery”

III) D. W. Griffin

1) Worked with Film a decade after Porter

2) Was the first to use close ups extendly and effectively

3) He used, flashbacks, action,

4) Established the smooth cut ideal – “the invisible art”

5) His main cutter was Jimmy stewert, later stewart’s wife joined the team

IV) Vigga Vertaf – took a camera into the streats of Moscow and recored the life of everyday people “A Man With a Camera”

1) He made the editor as important as any other person on the film

V) Koula shoft took a shot of a single guy, another of a woman drapped over her father’s coffin, of a bowl of soup, and of a young girl and her teddy bear and laced them together

1)

VI) Eisenstein – wanted to keep things cut, and dry, not utilizing “invisible cutting”

VII) Now everthing that was used to make Russia communist we use in Hollywood now

VIII) Hitchcook, was the master of suspense

1) Expressed supremely in Silence of the Lambs

IX) In the first 20, 25 years of filmmaking and Women were the main driving force behind editing

1) This was due to the thought that it was just like “Knitting”

2) It wasn’t until sound was introduced that men started becoming more prominante, because now “editing wasn’t knitting”

B) Sound

I) The advent of sound

II) Marget Booth – mastered the editing with sound and drew attention to herself

1) She commanded attention and respect from

2) One of the first Studio Editors for over 20 years

3) Great movie stars have been made because of Studio Editors

4)

C) Editing

I) Allows for an editor to manipulate the film to make a viewer view specific things

1) Particular emotions – hate, fear, love, sadness, joy, ect.

II) Some editors in order to edit effectively stay off of the set

III) An editor has to see how everything connected to itself, to the rest of the movie, to the rest of the world

IV)

D) The editor director relationship

I) Now 75 years later, the editor is the only other person that works on the film with the director as much as the director does himself

II) Sometimes the editors and directors spend so much time on a film together, that the time is more than that which they spend with their own spouses

III) “I think successful editors, are really, sly politicians.”

This was probably one of my favorite lectures we had all year. I had no idea how much the editor really does in a film these days. In class we learned about how being a film editor used to be a job that could be given to anyone all you did was cut and film strips. In todays world editing can be what makes a movie as succesful as it is. Editing can be uses to manipulate clips. Scenes where people are talking can be edited to be more serious by adding long pauses inbetween speaking or can be more humorous if thats the way the editor intends it. Today a director and editor work hand in hand to make great movies as great as the are.

- Sammy meets the Family

We went over classic tv show “ all in the family”

Episode where Archie bunker meets Sammy Davis.

Controversial

Poking fun at the idea of bigotry and racism

- Richard Nixon’s Checkers Speech

Richard Nixon appeared on t.v. to tell his side of a slander story spread against him

He gave out all the details

Trying to relate his the people to him he talked about his dog checkers and his children.

- Richard Nixon debates Ted Kennedy

people who watched it on television thought Kennedy one

people who listened to it on the radio though Nixon one

Kennedy defeated Nixon in a close call election and many speculate the debates made the election the way it was .

-OJ simpson trial

the car chase covered by helicopters and camera men

celebrity obsession

-September 11th ( no were not talking about my birthday )

camera footage covering the event and actually caught the second plane hitting the building.

3rd plane crashed into the pentagon

the reporter standing there just stopped talking when the second building fell. He felt that people we already seeing it and there was nothing he could say that would make it better or worse.

This lecture covered t.v. as a medium. Through t.v. shows that people watched important issues could be adressed in casual funny ways. Like the episode of All in the Family when Archie meets Sammie Davis and keeps coming off as racist to him. It was a way for the show creators to poke fun at how stupid discrimination is. With t.v. as a medium peoples appearance began to effect politics. Like with the debate between Nixon and Kennedy. It was said that people who listened to the debate thought that Nixon one but people who watched it thought Kennedy one because he was considered more handsome and put together at the time. T.v. also aloud us to view news stories as they were happening like the unfortunate events that took place on 9/11. I’m glad that we have t.v. as a medium I feel like the fact that 9/11 was broadcasted to so many people and we all witnessed how horrible what took place was really made us realize how serious the situation was. Without the graphic images it may have had less of an effect on people who were not close to new york. I speculate since almost everyone in America witnessed it happening we were all able to come together as a nation and everyone was able to do there part to help comeback from such a tragedy.

notes from Sarah Skidhanlin, hers were much better than mine for this lecture

This lecture showed the importance of radio as a medium. The radio back before we had computer or television or the internet was many peoples means of entertainment and information. The radio was used to portray information like news stories or even radio shows that told stories for fun. The difference between radio and print was that it was unmediated. It was also a faster way for people to receive information as I would guess that a lot of news stories were probably covered on the spot.
